The work environment
matches the physical environment around Riverton, Wyoming. Offices
are informal, low-key and friendly. People work hard,
but they work without the stress of living in a city where
high-pressure
jobs are coupled with high-pressure lifestyles. When quitting
time rolls around, it’s time to go horseback riding,
sit on the porch with your neighbor, play some baseball, or
take in
a movie rather than time to fight traffic to get home for the
day. This
kind of serenity means less time working toward your vacation
and more time enjoying your life.
On the banks of the Wind River, you will find a community of
people brought together not because of convenience or necessity,
but because
of choice. People choose to live in Riverton because of its
quality of life. They want to live in a place where they can
go fishing after work. They want to live in a place where
their neighbors join them – hammer in hand – to help
repair their roof, or where the checker at the grocery store doesn’t
need identification to accept their check. They want
the low – stress lifestyle of a rural community.
Living in a rural community does not have to mean having to give
up convenience, however. Riverton has a full-service hospital,
a regional airport, a community college and an active senior center. The
city is the economic and cultural hub of Fremont County. More
than 35,000 people are drawn to it from around the Wind River Basin
for work, shopping and pleasure. Employment opportunities
in the area range from jobs in government and energy, to health
care, precision instrument manufacturing, retail and construction. In
addition, agriculture and ranching-the original mainstays of Riverton’s
economy continues to be major economic and social forces in the
community. The community has an active arts council that sponsors
local cultural events and brings in several national touring companies
a year. You can see a ballet, hear a concert, wander through
an art exhibit or watch a play without having to drive to a big
city. Local actors participate in several theatrical productions
a year, and musicians play in a variety of musical groups,
including a community band, a string ensemble, a brass quintet,
both children’s and adult choirs and a jazz combo. Riverton
is surrounded by the Wind River Indian Reservation, which means
there is not only diversity in the arts, there is also diversity
in the community.
Riverton hosts several senior residential communities including
assisted-care facilities and a full-service nursing home. The
Riverton Senior Center, which was built in 1997, provides meals,
educational opportunities, transportation, day care and social
events for local seniors.
Riverton remains close to its western roots, so you may have
to wait for a cattle drive to cross the highway, but you’ll
also be treated to good old-fashioned western hospitality wherever
you go around town.
