Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis Wyoming

Hot Springs State Park Website

In Thermopolis (Greek for “Hot City”) the scalding water comes from the Big Spring, which is located in Hot Springs State Park. From this turquoise and green spring, the water flows into cooling ponds at a temperature of 127 degrees. A boardwalk leads you over terraces from the over flow of water. These terraces are made chiefly of lime and gypsum which separate from the cooling waters. The colors you see are due mainly to primitive plants (algae), which grow in the warm water. The cooler water then runs over rainbow-hued mineral terraces into swimming pools and Jacuzzis, and into the Big Horn River.

Some geologists think the underground formation that supplies the 3.6 million-gallon per day mineral laden spring is the same one that provides the wonders of Yellowstone National Park. The water from these springs has healing qualities to them. There are at least 27 different minerals in the water; making it very healthful to drink.

Two pools, TePee Spa and Star Plunge, both feature indoor and outdoor pools, and water slides, as well as Jacuzzi tubs and tanning decks. The TePee Spa offers WATSU Massage Therapy. Other pools fed by Big Spring are the Jacuzzi tubs at the Holiday Inn of the Waters and the Quality Inn & Suites. The State BathHouse is free to the public and provides both private bathtubs and a public tiled pool. The Gottsche Rehabilitation and Wellness Center also uses the hot water for therapy treatment. A hot water well, which is located at Fountain of Youth RV Park, feeds an outdoor pool.

After you have enjoyed the waters, you can drive through Hot Springs State Park. Just as they did more than a century ago, Bison roam within the 10 acres of Hot Springs State Park. See them grazing in the pasture near Monument Hill. A herd of Wild Burros and deer will also be seen.
