| The Old Block House
was constructed in 1869, at the request of Chief Washakie; this
was used for protection against hostile enemies of the Eastern
Band of Shoshone Indians. The building was used by Bureau
of Indian Affairs (B.I.A.) employees for refuge when the agency
was attacked by hostile Indians from 1872-1876. The original
building had a dirt roof, preventing the roof to catch on fire
when hostile tribes fired arrows that were on fire. A three-month
supply of food was kept in the walls of the building and a well
of good drinking water was located within. The Indians were
never able to capture it or set it on fire. Gunfire erupted
from the loopholes that can still be seen in the walls today,
which killed many hostile Indians. The building has been
stabilized for future restoration and currently has been nominated
to the National Registry of Historic Places. |
